I was pleasantly surprised to see that the Washington Post, AKA Pravda on the Potomac, ran an article last week about the manufactured housing industry that was (i) not hidden behind the Post’s paywall, and (ii) both informative and fair (Kerrymen, Newfies, and people from New Jersey can click here, here or here for the move-your-lips version). The article says that manufactured housing is a workable solution for the current housing crisis. Manufactured homes are cheaper to produce than site-built homes and well-run parks are good places to live. Barriers to industry expansion include restrictive zoning laws and a lack of good consumer finance options comparable to those available to stick-built homeowners. All true, valuable policy inputs and devoid of politics – but rarely seen in respectable media.
